There’s something undeniably magical about Santa’s Whiskers Christmas Cookies — those buttery, tender cookies speckled with jewel-bright maraschino cherries and rolled in a blanket of sweet coconut. They slice beautifully, bake up golden at the edges, and bring that old-fashioned holiday delight to any cookie tray. Every bite has the perfect balance of creamy butter, soft cherries, and toasty coconut crunch.

These cookies are also wonderfully practical: mix the dough, shape it into a log, chill, slice, and bake. They travel well, store well, and make thoughtful homemade gifts. If ever a cookie captured the warmth of Christmas nostalgia, it’s Santa’s Whiskers.

Why This Christmas Cookies Recipe Works

Santa’s Whiskers is a classic slice-and-bake Christmas cookie, and it’s beloved for a reason. The dough comes together quickly, chills beautifully, and bakes into buttery perfection every time. Here’s why this recipe always turns out so good:

  • Bright, Festive Cherry Flavor: Whole maraschino cherries fold into the dough, giving every slice a sweet, jewel-like pop of fruit that makes the cookies flavorful and visually joyful.
  • Rich, Tender Butter Base: Creaming the butter and powdered sugar creates a soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture that stays delicate even after chilling and slicing.
  • Almond and Vanilla Aromatics: A blend of almond and vanilla extracts deepens the flavor, adding warmth and nostalgia that perfectly complements the cherries and coconut.
  • Signature Coconut Crust: Rolling the dough in sweetened coconut creates the “whiskers”—a lightly toasted, crisp, fragrant edge on every cookie.
  • Reliable Slice-and-Bake Method: Chilling the dough ensures clean slices and consistent baking, making this recipe incredibly convenient: mix, chill, slice, bake.

Christmas Cookies

Christmas Cookies Ingredients

  • Butter: Creates the rich, tender base of the cookie and gives the dough its soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture when creamed with powdered sugar.
  • Powdered Sugar: Blends smoothly into the butter, ensuring a delicate sweetness and a fine, tender crumb without any graininess.
  • Maraschino Cherries: Add bright, jewel-like pops of sweetness throughout the dough, giving every slice its festive color and signature flavor.
  • Almond Extract: Brings a warm, nostalgic aroma that pairs beautifully with the cherries, giving the cookies their classic holiday character.
  • Sweetened Shredded Coconut: Forms the iconic “whiskers” around the cookie’s edges, toasting lightly in the oven for a crisp, fragrant finish.

Christmas Cookies Instructions

  1. Cream the Butter and Sugar: Beat the butter and powdered sugar until light, fluffy, and fully combined to form the base of the dough.
  2. Add the Cherries and Extracts: Mix in the whole maraschino cherries, almond extract, vanilla extract, and salt until everything is evenly incorporated.
  3. Add the Flour: Stir in the flour until a soft, crumbly-but-moist dough forms and holds together when pressed.
  4. Prepare the Coconut Sheet: Lay out parchment and sprinkle half the coconut in a loose rectangle to create the coating for the cookie log.
  5. Shape the Dough Log: Place the dough on the coconut, flatten slightly, sprinkle the remaining coconut on top, and shape into a 12–14-inch log about 3 inches thick.
  6. Wrap and Chill: Roll the parchment around the dough, twist the ends, and chill for at least 2 hours or overnight so the log firms for clean slicing.
  7. Slice the Cookies: Cut the chilled dough into 1/4–1/2-inch rounds, keeping the slices even so they bake uniformly.
  8. Bake Until Golden: Place the rounds on a parchment-lined sheet and bake at 350°F for 12–15 minutes until the edges turn lightly golden and the coconut is toasted.
  9. Cool Completely: Let the cookies cool on the pan or a rack so they set and develop their final tender, buttery texture.

Christmas Cookies Substitutions & Variations

Here are some of my favorite substitutions and variations:

  • Cherry Options: Maraschino cherries give these cookies their classic nostalgic sweetness, but you can swap in chopped glacé cherries or dried cherries for a deeper, richer flavor.
  • Extract Variations: Almond extract is traditional and adds that unmistakable holiday aroma, but you can use all vanilla extract for a softer flavor or add a splash of orange extract for a citrus-forward twist.
  • Coconut Adjustments: Sweetened shredded coconut toasts beautifully, but unsweetened coconut works if you prefer a less sweet edge. You can also use finely shredded coconut for a more delicate crust.
  • Flavor Add-Ins: A handful of mini chocolate chips, chopped pistachios, or orange zest can be mixed into the dough if you want a more festive or colorful variation.
  • Texture Changes: For a slightly firmer, more shortbread-like cookie, add an extra tablespoon or two of flour. For a softer, more tender cookie, reduce the flour slightly or slice the dough a bit thicker.

What To Serve With

Main Dishes

  • Santa’s Whiskers are wonderfully buttery and festive, making them a cheerful finish after classic holiday mains like glazed ham, roasted turkey, or herb-crusted pork—they bring a sweet, coconut-kissed note that balances savory, hearty dishes.
  • They also pair beautifully with rich winter entrées such as beef tenderloin, roasted duck, or braised short ribs, offering a light, fruity counterpoint to deeper, more robust flavors.
  • For a vegetarian-friendly pairing, try serving them after a cozy meal of roasted squash, creamy risotto, or mushroom pot pie—the bright cherries and toasted coconut make a delightful, uplifting dessert.

Sides

  • Santa’s Whiskers make a wonderful sweet element on a holiday dessert table next to classics like fudge, truffles, or peppermint bark—they add color, texture, and nostalgic charm.
  • They also pair well with warm beverages such as hot cocoa, mulled cider, or spiced tea, where the buttery crumb and toasted coconut shine.
  • For a festive twist, serve them alongside fresh fruit, a simple cheese board, or a scoop of vanilla or cherry ice cream to highlight both their sweetness and their delicate texture.

FAQs

Can I use different cherries?

While maraschino cherries are traditional, chopped glacé cherries or dried cherries can be substituted for a richer, deeper flavor.

Do I have to use coconut?

Coconut is signature to Santa’s Whiskers, but you can skip it or use finely shredded coconut for a subtler coating if preferred.

How thick should I slice the cookies?

Slice the chilled log 1/4–1/2 inch thick; thinner slices bake faster and crisper, thicker slices yield tender, buttery rounds.

How should I store leftovers?

Store completely cooled cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For longer storage, they can be frozen for up to 2 months, and you can reheat briefly in a low oven to refresh.

  2. It looks like Christmas… Beautiful!!! Sidenote: the Hallmark Channel said it was ok to eat the raw dough. Raw flour is dangerous as well as a dough with eggs. Google why you shouldn’t eat things with raw flour and what can be in raw flour! Ewwwwwww!
