Bratsgiving, or National Bratwurst Day, is August 16th and Johnsonville is kicking off the celebration in Seattle on July 29th to coincide with the Seafair Festival.  We’ve partnered with Johnsonville and Safeway to bring you a delicious easy recipe using one of Johnsonville’s delicious styles of bratwurst.  I chose the smoked all-beef cooked style.  This is a fast way for my family to get dinner on the table or pack up to eat on the go picnic-style while enjoying the Seafair events!  Peppers and onions get a makeover for this recipe and a quick butter and toast on some potato buns make all the difference for the final result.  In Seattle we invented the drunk dog; any street cart vendor worth their weight serves up great sausages with cream cheese.  That inspired our red pepper cream cheese!  Don’t miss out on this recipe!

Have you ever heard of Carl the Great Bratsgiver?  Well, I hadn’t either. Carl the Great Bratsgiver is a character who was created with the creative input from 15 Johnsonville members, and the legend is that Carl goes from house to house on Bratsgiving Eve spreading the joy of the holiday, leaving behind delicious brats in each house he visits.  As a bona fide meat lover, I’m on board with Carl’s mission.  A real, live Carl will tour Seattle and the Seafair events to kick off Bratsgiving and celebrate with the city of Seattle on July 29. Get out to Seafair and see Carl for yourself!  Or host your own Bratsgiving party.  I’ve got the best recipe to get you started:

Quick Brats with Sautéed Peppers & Onions Slathered with Special Cream Cheese

1 package of your fav Johnsonville Brats

1 package of your favorite buns

1 red onion, sliced thinly

1 red bell pepper, sliced thinly

1 cup pickled jalapeños

8 oz. cream cheese

2 tbsp. butter

Salt & pepper to taste

Sauté your onion, bell pepper, and jalapeños until they just begin to caramelize.  Place 1/4 cup of the hot sautéed veg and the cream cheese in the work bowl of your food processor.  Pulse 3-4 times and salt and pepper to taste.  At this time, brown your brats in the same pan you made your veggies.  While the brats are going, toast the buns under a low broiler for 2-3 minutes.  To assemble, slather your toasted bun with cream cheese, place a brat inside, and top with the remaining sautéed peppers, onions, and jalapeños.
